Singapore ✈ Bangkok ✈ Kandy + Kithugala, Sri Lanka (Day 10)

This is a continuation of:

We drove over to Kandy after checking out of Centara resorts at Pasikudah.

A beautiful sunset.

Stopped at a roadside stall and bought some corn! Yums.

Had a Sri Lankan dinner when we reached our stay for the night.

Played with some fireworks! It was scary yet fun at the same time. My first time!

The next morning, we head over to Sri Dalada Maligawa, the famous Temple of the Tooth. We were told to bring a white top to enter the temple.

The men and the women had different entrance to the temple. Tourists have to pay a fee of 1000Rs to enter. That is equivalent to SGD10. A rather hefty fee to enter a temple.

I don't feel comfortable taking photos of the statues and hence, no photos. It was very crowded and we had to queue to get into the main hall. We explored the grounds and learnt a bit about its history before we left Kandy.

We head over to Kithugala for white-water rafting! It was at Kelani River and also the shooting location for Bridge of River Kwai. We paid 1000Rs for this wonderful experience (Upekha and her family managed to get some discount for us). This is 1000Rs well-spent (better than the temple and Pinnawala Elephant Orphange)

I capsized and the water was rushing and I can only stay calm and hold on to my life-jacket. They managed to pulled me up and I heard uncle was so anxious he even wanted to jump into the river for me! I was the only one who fell off the raft. Quite cool actually. I gained the whole experience! When we finished all 4 major rapids/drops, we were lined up and had a raft race for a good 100m? Then our guides told us to jump into the river and swim to the end point. It was really fun, just floating about, taking photos in the 30ft deep river. :D

Singapore ✈ Bangkok ✈ Pasikudah, Sri Lanka (Day 9)

This is a continuation of:

It's been a really long time and I should really finish blogging about this trip because there's more trips coming up soon.

After Nuwara Eliya, we travelled to Pasikudah, located at north-east of Sri Lanka. It used to be a popular tourist destination but due to the 2004 tsunami and Sri Lankan Civil War, the numbers declined. It's a really beautiful coastal town.

We stayed at Centara Resorts which was a really lovely place. I usually would not spend so much on accommodation because I would be out of the hotel most of the time but since we're spending the entire day here, it's really worth it.

We left our passports at Upekha's aunt's house and couldn't check in because they refuse to accept any other forms of identification. They did not even allow it when Upekha offered to book a room for us which doesn't really make sense? Thankfully, A has the soft copy of his passport saved in Dropbox. Kids, this is why a soft copy of your passport is important!

We paid for a sea view but there was no sea view because we were blocked by this super huge pillar -.- I felt so cheated. The resort has a direct access to the beach which was awesome. Not only that, it was a relatively new resort so basically everything was new!

We had a late check-out and enjoyed their lunch before leaving the resort. If I'm going back to Pasikudah, I'll definitely stay in Centara again :D

Restaurant Week 2014: Stellar @ 1-Altitude

The second Restaurant Week 2014 returned in October and so glad that I've managed to secure a decent booking as the priority booking was out at 12mn. I remembered there wasn't a clear indication of the exact start time for booking for the previous one in March. Camped by the laptop and made reservations for Stellar!

The reason why I picked this was because of the view and it was a restaurant that I've been wanting to try. On top of that, it seems like a nice restaurant for us to celebrate our 2nd anniversary (we are 2!)

Complimentary from the chef. It's like strawberry jam.

I requested for a window seat, mentioning that it was our anniversary but unfortunately, window seats are all reserved for non-Restaurant Week diners.

My Tuna Tataki Salad with cherry tomatoes, wild rice and pickled cucumber. Pickled cucumber gives the dish a refreshing taste.

His sesame crusted foie gras, black radish, smokey eggplant. I don't eat foie gras so I can't tell you how nice it it. But A loves it.

Main course: his poached halibut with asparagus, roast vine tomatoes, morel beurre blanc. Had a bite of the fish and I love it.

My pickled Wagyu beef cheek with autumn forest mushroom, 'agro dolce' red cabbage cepe powder. I only realized it was beef cheeks when the dish arrived.  It's succulent, soft and tender. I don't really like eating fats (or anything that feels like fats) and so, I had to get used to the texture before I really enjoyed my main course. There were 3 pieces and I thought it was such a small serving that I would be hungry after I finish it but I was wrong. It was actually very filling!

Our desserts came with a surprise! I mentioned earlier that I had written that it was our anniversary and the staff gave us a mini surprise with this! Very thoughtful of them to do this :) Our waitress wished us a happy anniversary and even took the initiative to help us take a picture.

His Valrhona Cocoa Beet Bang. So crispy and sweet! Me love it so much that I am willing to pay for a second serving.

My Smokey Cigar which was lapsang souchang tea infused dark chocolat. The white powder tasted like tea. Contrasting taste of tea and chocolate (Y)

Since we were there already, we simply can't pass up on the chance to visit the bar one level up. It was my first time there as well.

Singapore is really beautiful at night, isn't she?

Overall it was really a nice dining experience at Stellar, especially with the attentive staff taking care of our needs and the extra touch in making our anniversary dinner a memorable one.
